We believe that the National Student Rodeo (NSR) is the largest freestyle paddling event in the world, the largest student kayaking event in the UK, and the best paddling party in existence. The event is held at the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont (HPP) in Nottingham. We camp at the campsite just around the corner and use a huge marquee next to the Old Nottinghamian's Rugby Club for the party.

NSR is for anyone 18 years old and over. It's primarily aimed at higher education students. So students can enter any competition category other than the old school event. If you're on a gap year or not a student anymore, you can enter the old school event so long as you can get a university canoe club that's attending to enter you and you get the appropriate insurance.

The event is designed for all abilities, and we have a team to ensure the event is run safely for you to fully enjoy! We aim to make the event so enjoyable that it'll encourage everyone into the sport, including you! It's what the National Student Rodeo is all about! It doesn't matter if you've never sat in a boat before because all of the best prizes go to the beginners - so you have no excuse not to complete!

Your club captain is responsible for entering all online details for everyone belonging to the club, so pester them to ensure you're entered. If your club is a first time attendee or you don't know your registration login details, please contact us and we'll sort you out.

Extreme Slalom

Everyone with a competition weekend ticket except for those who have only enteered the old school event, or duo event is automatically entered into this general competition. Each competitor will be given a numbered bib and a Saturday morning start time; all K1/C1/Squirt entrants will take part. There will be a number of tasks on your way down the course that will allow the judges to place everyone into beginner, intermediate, and advanced categories for both the mens' and womens' events. The great majority of entrants will be entering the K1 competitions, which is why we need to impose some skill-based order!

Being on the water in time is critical to the smooth running of the event, so if you might get to HPP late, please make sure the organisers know in plenty of time before the times are allocated, ie. by the time registration closes.

K1

The K1 (single person kayak) event is the largest event; it will be split into beginners', intermediate, and advanced - as well as by gender using the extreme slalom competition. The heats and the final will then be judged in relation to the skill level of the competitors in each category. Beginners will try to wow the judges with crowd pleasers, intermediates will show off old and new school moves to gain points, and the advanced competitions will be judged like any standard freestyle contest. Points may also be awarded for on-river fancy dress!

C1

There will be at least one C1 (single person canoe) freestyle heat and final - more will depend on the level of interest, in which case levels will be determined by the extreme slalom competition in the exact same manner as the K1 competitors. Just like the K1, beginners will try to wow the judges with crowd pleasers, intermediates will show off old and new school moves to gain points, and the advanced competitions will be judged like any standard freestyle contest. Points may also be awarded for on-river fancy dress!

Squirt

There will be at least one squirt boat heat and final - more will depend on the level of interest. Squirt boat competitors do not compete in the extreme slalom like K1 or C1. Points will be awarded as at any standard squirt event.

Duo

There will be duo (two person kayak) heats and a final. The heats will be comprised of boaterX style races down the course to determine who will make it through to the final. The final will be held in the looping pool, where points will be awarded for anything and everything at the judges' discretion. The duo final is one the highlights of the weekend and shouldn't be missed! Entries are for per boat (just tick "Duo" for one person for each Duo you enter - the system will then charge for both paddlers). Traditionally, each university has been limited to two duo entries. This limit is relaxed this year, but we reserve the right to reimpose it if the number of entries is too large.

Old School open event

The old school event is for anyone who is 18 years old or older and on a gap year or not a student anymore; you can enter the old school event so long as you can get a university canoe club that's attending to enter you and you get the appropriate insurance. All that is required is a pre-2000 boat and the more retro the kit, the better. There will only be one final, with no heats for this event. So the number of places are limited! Ensure you sign up early to avoid disappoint! The final will happen in the looping pool and points will be awarded for any old or new school moves you can throw!

Entertainment

Party photo 1 Party photo 2 Party photo 3 Party photo 4 Party photo 5 Party photo 6

River Legacy will once again be returning to bring the entertainment! They'll be bringing the glorous party tent, with lights, music, and specially NSR brewed beer at the bar! They'll also serve your dinner before you get your freak on the 'dance floor'! Not to mention the day time entertainment they'll provide by the course with great and cheesy tunes and questionable banter!

River Legacy bring a small army of volunteers who arrive days before the weekend starts to set up the party tent. Cooking your food is just one of many behind-the-scenes jobs which often go unappreciated. Thanks to them and all of their volunteers for doing an excellent job.

River Legacy is a charity that provides funding, facilities, and support for paddlesports; the money you spend in the bar goes straight back into the paddling community.
